Scottish Music with Isobel Mieras
Isobel is one of Scotland’s most experienced and successful teachers having taught and influenced many of to-days’ best-known Scottish harp players. One of her greatest joys is working with, and arranging or composing music for harp ensembles of all abilities. Classes will be separated into under 14 and Adults

Play music from Finland, Ireland, Scotland, Hawaii, Mexico, France, Spain, Isle of Man, Italy and Austria. Hear yourself play with an ensemble. This workshop is for all levels - very beginners to the most advanced players. It will be lots of fun.

Using the Harp as a therapeutic tool in music therapy

Christina Tourin will present the material from her newly released book: Harp Therapy - A Cradle of Sound and discuss the elements of Harp Therapy, the current research, and demonstration of using the harp therapeutically. The workshops will also contain some selections of performance. She will be available for book signings after the event.

A Rainbow of Sound Musical Theatre Special for Children
A Rainbow of Sound features the Emerald Harp story. This is a delightful story that takes place in Scotland. Children have the opportunity to participate and play the harp during the program. Hi Helen,
I hope you are recovering from the harp festival, I really enjoyed my day so thank you to all of you for organising it.

Thanks,
Gill

I would like to say again how much I enjoyed the Derbyshire Festival last weekend; both the participation as a beginner and as an audience member.  The evening concert was really excellent!  Congratulations to you for organising such a wonderful event!

With kind regards,
Angela

Hi Helen & Paul,
Thanks again for all your hard work organising yet another great festival. I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend - it was very relaxed, friendly and informal and I particularly enjoyed being able to do lots of ensemble playing. The concert was good too - in fact, my sister who has come along to the previous two concerts thought this was the best one so far!! It was a pity we didn't manage to fit in a lesson, but perhaps that was wishfull thinking!!!

I really enjoyed doing Alison & Carolyn's ensemble courses - I do hope they'll be back next year as they seem to have lots of good ideas for the future. I think everyone in Alison's adult classes went away inspired and we all agreed we'd like to come back next year to do a similar but slightly more advanced course - I've already booked my hotel room for next year!!!

Thanks again and thanks too to Paul for all his help moving my harp around - I know the skylark is not exactly heavy, but it was a great help in my current condition!!!!!

Best wishes,
Jill (e-mail November 2011)

Congratulations on a fabulous concert on Saturday, we enjoyed it thoroughly.
Best regards,
Gricel

Hi Helen,

Just to say thanks for the delights of the weekend past. You must be very tired--what energy you put into the Festival, and clearly all of your teaching, to inspire such a successful event.

You also have a superb band of volunteer helpers of whom you must be very proud--such folk are the backbone of arts events especially in the current economic climate--but best of all they were so helpful and kind. I enjoyed everything and had lovely classes-it is always interesting to meet harp enthusiasts of all ages and all stages. You encounter some fascinating and very clever people, from whom there is so much for the "teacher" to learn.

Everything was great--but highlights for me included the performance by your excellent harp group of Elizabeth's piece and witnessing her delight on hearing it and being acknowledged. Also watching Laura not only in her solo performance, but her complete concentration and involvement throughout all the group pieces--Zoë's composition was another delight as was working with the 5 young players in class. All different characters--Hannah's bright eyes and willingness to have a go at anything--Imogen rather shy, but responsive to all encouragement and Mali's mischievous smile--it was a joy. Another highlight for me was the stillness of Tina's first set-a lovely moment and then Ben's well chosen and beautifully introduced group of pieces. Viktor's courage in choosing to play the Chaconne to us--wow!--and then the ravishingly beautiful sound he produced in his encore--all magical. I think Alison too is a genius to produce such a polished musical performance in one short afternoon. I am sure that everyone else has their own individual list of highlights and I can only speak of the events I attended. For a moment or two, I wished I had said I would take part in the concert, but it was such a pleasure to sit in the audience and just observe and enjoy.

Please thank Paul for patiently picking me up and taking me back to the Premier Inn --which was very comfortable indeed.

All best wishes to you and all your wonderful helpers,

Isobel (e-mail October 2011)

Hi Helen,

I hope you are having a very restful day today. Just wanted to say a big well done for the festival. Mum and I really enjoyed being part of it again. You're a star!

Dear Helen,

Just a note to thank you for all your work in organising the harp festival last weekend.  I very much enjoyed coming for the Friday and meeting up with harpists from all over - both people I've met before and new contacts, and sharing ideas and information  about life as a wedding harpist.  It was good to meet Lucy and listen to her ideas on accompaniment and to hear her lovely voice.  The concert in the evening was like a mini Edinburgh harp festival - with the range of people you had performing, and the mixture of classical and traditional - all excellent.  And I came home with new music and less money!!

Unfortunately I had to go after Friday as I had wedding bookings over the weekend.  But I will certainly hope to come again for a top up of harpy things next time.

Best wishes
Liz (e-mail October 2009)

Hello Helen,

Returning to London, Solti chose him to play with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. It was a 'Golden Age' which included performances by Callas, Sutherland, Schwarzkopf, Fonteyn and Nureyev. He then became a founder member of the new Welsh National Opera Company under the direction of James Lockhart and, after a short time with the Royal Philharmonic, joined the London Philharmonic under the batons of Boult, Solti, Haitink and Tennstedt.

His solo concerts have taken him all over the world, performing many of the compositions that have been written especially for him. He has also performed as soloist with the London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, etc. and appeared as soloist with the London Sinfonietta at the London 'Proms' with Sir Simon Rattle conducting.

Since winning first prize in an International American Competition with his composition 'Petite Suite' for Harp, he has written many pieces including the 'Concertino Pastorale', which he played with the London Philharmonic at the Royal Festival Hall, Walter Susskind conducting.

With Princess Grace of Monaco, he devised a recital of poetry and music for the official engagement of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

In 2000 he was Principal Harpist at a 'Prom' Concert given by the "World Orchestra for Peace" conducted by Gergiev. This orchestra was composed of principal musicians from the world's great orchestras.

Recent concerts have included a performance of his solo harp concerto and his new concerto for two harps with the Budapest Strings, and a solo recital attended by the widow of Zoltan Kodály.

He regularly gives concerts and master classes in France, Germany and Italy as well as the UK and has recently formed a Duo with the distinguished violinist Michael Bochmann.

His recording of Ravel's Introduction & Allegro with the National Philharmonic became a bestseller in the USA, and other highly acclaimed recordings have been issued by RCA, Meridian and Pyramid.

For many years he was Professor of Harp at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has written a 'Method' for the harp published by Boosey and Hawkes.
